My Students
What would a good classroom be without a place to store all of the necessary hands-on materials that young children need access do each day? We need a place to organize, store, and have access to our daily materials.
My students are from a Title I, low income, urban public school.
They strive to learn all they can each day and really enjoy using a variety if materials to do so. However, in the midst of learning to be more independent, they have found it hard to return things to their correct locations because there is not a simple or prime location to store all of the materials. Math items are scattered around the room and literacy materials are usually locked up because there is no where else to store them. The students need to be able to access these materials at their leisure.
My Project
By having two bookshelves at the appropriate height, my students will learn to be more responsible because they will have to put the materials back on the shelves as they were before; more organized because they will be in charge of making sure everything is in its correct location on the shelves, and more independent because they will have access to all of the materials, all the time which will make them more aware of when and when not to touch certain materials. The teacher will not have to watch them as closely is she knows where the materials are supposed to be at the end of the day.
My project is so important because I want my students to continue to love what they are learning.
In order for them to explore their learning environment they need continuous access to hands-on materials, and instead they are being put away. I want to give them opportunities to continue to foster their independence, responsibility, and organizational skills.
