Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my classroom come from a variety of economic and cultural backgrounds. My students are on the autism spectrum and each face their own challenges, however, they each have their own strengths and abilities! My students are 3 and 4 years old and for many, this is their first school experience! They have to cope with separation anxiety, learn the routine of school and the structure of the day. They require visual supports to get them through their school day.
My students are creative, enthusiastic, and strong!
They love to move, listen to stories, sing songs, and love lots of positive attention! We learn during small and large group time. We also have a great deal of individual one on one learning! I focus on each child's individual potential each day. They are all so different and unique!
My Project
My students need a designated “calm down” area in the classroom where they can take a break when they feel overwhelmed. My students have a difficult time understanding feelings and emotions. They have a difficult time coping with their own feelings. A big part of our classroom focuses on expressing themselves using visual pictures. My students tend to become overwhelmed and have melt downs, at times running away from tasks and engaging in unsafe behaviors.
We all need a break sometimes to decompress!
It’s important to give students a safe place in the classroom where they can take this break and avoid negative and unsafe behaviors.
A calm down area will give students a safe place to go when they need to decompress. At this time, our calm down area consists of a small carpet, sensory bottles and visual supports. The students will benefit from having soft, comfy seats to sit on while taking a break. I would like to incorporate emotion dolls to help students understand and work through feelings.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
