My 22 second grade students have a lot of energy and are eager to learn and achieve success. Throughout the day, my students relocate to different areas of the room to stay engaged. Being restricted to their desks all day long does not make children productive learners. Therefore, we spend a lot of time coming together at the front of the classroom. My students love gathering in this area for morning meetings, mini-lessons, interactive read-alouds, and shared writing.
I teach in a wonderful school that is set in a suburb of a city and has a culturally and economically diverse population of students.
My Project
If my classroom receives the requested rug, my students would be so much more comfortable, and as a result, engagement would improve. The new rug would provide an open and spacious area for whole group instruction in all academic areas. We begin each day at the front of our classroom for morning meeting. Students also gather in this area at the start of each lesson. My teaching style is very hands-on and interactive, and this new rug would provide the needed area for movement and flexibility. The classroom rug would also provide a warm and safe place for the students to gather.
Coming together is an important part of my daily instruction because it encourages active listening and participation from all of my students.
The classroom rug would become the focal point and increase the sense of community within my classroom.
