A Rug for Rugrats

My Students

My classroom is self-contained, and I teach in an urban area. Reading is very important, and I want to highlight the importance of it this year with this group of students. I do know that I will have a variety of students on different levels. I have a group of students that come from different backgrounds. More than half of my students are performing below grade level due to the pandemic. These kids are special to me because they are aware they missed a lot but they never give up!

My Project

I'm new to 2nd grade! I've taught upper grades the past few years. In upper grades, I did not use rugs and never saw the reason to have a rug in my classroom. Entering into my 2nd grade classroom, I did not have a rug. All the rugs were being used at the school, that I teach at. I thought that it was no big deal that I did not have a rug. I figured I could get dots to put onto the floor for my students.

Months into teaching, I realized I needed a classroom rug for my students.

Dots were coming up from off the floor. My students were sitting on the floor reading their books. I want my students to be comfortable when reading. I also need a rug so I can set the setting for whole group collaboration and discussions. I would like to introduce concepts to my students in whole group at the rug and then dismiss them to trying the new concepts. Please help give us a classroom rug.

I want my students to be able to come to the rug to also read a book, do their center work. Storytime would also be great for the classroom rug.
