This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach reading to 48 fabulous 4th graders this year! My school is located near one of the largest and busiest shipping ports in the world. The students in my class are very proud of our school and town. Nearly all of my students receive free or reduced lunch.

My students all come from different backgrounds, but they all have one thing in common-- the love of learning!

The students in my class are inquisitive learners. They are always asking questions and wanting to learn more. They love to read and write in all subject areas. From the minute they walk in the door in the morning, they are ready to learn!

My Project

I am requesting a classroom rug where my students can meet during reading lessons. I teach two 1-hour instructional blocks of reading to two classes of 24 students every morning. My students currently sit at their desks the entire 1-hour block.

The donation of a classroom rug will provide my students a learning space where they can stay engaged during reading lessons.

With the rug, my students will not have to sit at their desks the entire time which can get very uncomfortable and leads to disengagement. They can be on the rug for the mini-lesson and move back to their desks for independent work. The rug will provide a space for students to stay close and connected to their peers and the teacher during lessons. They will be close to their peers which allows them to easily turn and discuss with one another. Being closer to the teacher, will also allow students to hear better. Lastly, with a classroom rug, students will be more connected to the lesson. They won't have distractions to play with like they do at their desks. Therefore, they will need less reminders to stay on task.
