My students need a rug, lighting, stools and pillows for a comfortable, multi-purpose space they can claim ownership of.

My Students
The writers I teach impress me everyday. They have a strong work ethic and strive for excellence in all that they do, meeting challenges both academic and personal with great character.
Over 90% of my students are Hmong American, and many struggle with English language proficiency.
You can imagine the challenges that a composition course presents: grammar rules that many Americans simply absorbed as small children must be kept at the front of their teenage minds as they attempt mastery of rhetoric. All this, and they're still eager to provide thoughtful and focused feedback to their classmates.
Your donation will help me honor my students' willingness to take on the writing process so collaboratively.
My Project
I've got this funny little space attached to my classroom. Kids walk by it as they enter writing class each day, regarding it as a storage unit (which I've admittedly been treating it as).
I'd love to make this a multi-purpose space of their own, in which they could accomplish a number of things.
I have never met students so willing to invest in one another's writing; I'd like to honor that by encouraging rotating groups to use this room for peer review that doesn't distract the other writers in the class. The flexible seating (stools and floor cushions) will help students become even more comfortable in sharing their writing and getting honest feedback.
My classroom also houses the 12th grade lending library. I have been growing this collection, with special attention to contemporary non-fiction that may attract my more literary-fatigued students. The track lighting will serve to illuminate these texts, as the room is a bit dark, and the library cards and pockets will help us stay organized. Finally, the comfortable floor seating will invite students to invest some time in reading.
