My students need a classroom river kit to design, create, and observe a complete river system during our study of landforms in our classroom.
FULLY FUNDED! Dr. McGuire's classroom raised $387

My Students
Although many of my students have seen rivers, many do not understand how rivers are created. Using the classroom river system, we will be able to design, build, and observe our own river system in the classroom. Students will learn how this landform is created with a hands-on, minds-on experience.
I have a classroom of 20 fifth grade students, 10 girls and 10 boys.
Our school is a small, rural public school located in North Carolina. We have an interesting blend of personalities in our classroom, which can make for lively discussions and lessons. My students have limited educational opportunities outside of the classroom, as many come from economically disadvantaged homes.
My Project
I try to plan science activities for my students that use discovery learning, requiring students to think through problems and develop multiple solutions. The use of the classroom river system will enhance our study of landforms, as we examine how rivers are created. Students will then take that knowledge and apply it to the design, building, and observation of their own river system in the classroom. I cannot think of a better way to have all students actively involved in their learning than by having an in-class model that they have helped to create. As the model is reusable, many classrooms of students in the future will also benefit from its use.
My students are eager to learn and I want to provide them with opportunities to explore areas in science.
The use of the classroom river system will provide my students with a kinesthetic learning experience, allowing them to work with their minds and their hands to develop solutions to problems. My goal is to produce excellent problem solvers. The classroom river system will provide an opportunity for my students to practice critical thinking skills needed for future success.
