Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As the 9th and 10th grade school counselor I have learned the true essence of student advocacy. My students come from many different worlds. But whichever world they arrive from, they are all looking for a safe space and a person who can shed light on their lives.
The materials I requested are resources that can help to make the counselor's office more comfortable and nurturing.
For example, comfortable seating is essential for students who often share some of the most uncomfortable things. Dimmer lights and essential oils can enhance a calm, nurturing space, it helps students find a sense of peace and serenity even in the most troubling times. Social-emotional activities are supportive for students who struggle with their mental health, opening up and sharing openly. It is also helpful for working with our students with disabilities population. It can be supportive when working with counseling groups and even useful during advisory lessons for whole classroom activities. This means that they are great resources for all students.
"Fidgets in high school?" people often ask me, Yes! They are extremely supportive for students who struggle with anxiety, anger, depression, test anxiety, you name it. Snacks help students get by throughout the day, especially because our high schoolers often miss breakfast, and lunch is at the end of our school day. It serves as a little pick me up.
The school counselor's office supports students in the following areas: academics, personal life, and with future goals and dreams. I believe the resources requested will contribute to the safe haven they seek in one of the most vulnerable spaces in a school building.
