My Students

What kind of math does the SAT cover? What about the SAT II? the ACT? The students do not have much resources when it comes to extra practice for standardized tests, especially the math portions.

We are a public high school is located in the heart of an urban city in California.

We are a Title I school with 100% rate of free or reduced lunch. Our students come from primarily low income immigrant families. However, as a magnet school we have some of the brightest and highly motivated students in the district. The students' ability and potentials are often limited by the resources that are available to them. As our district is facing dire financial crisis, the resources are dwindling. Your generous donations will definitely provide new avenues for the students to expand their mathematical knowledge and contribute to their chances of success in academia.

My Project

Students often learn formulas, methods, and solve problems in their math classes. However, the curriculum do not include how the content are addressed in other ways such as how they are asked on standardized tests. My intention is to create a library full of math books for students to use and enjoy. This project will start this collection by providing SAT preparation books that will help students score higher on the SAT and give them the opportunities to be competitive for gaining college admission. This will not only benefit the students in my particular class, but it will benefit the whole school. Everyone will have access to the materials; this is the first step in to turn my class into a math resource center for the entire student body.

I have a vision of creating a resource library in my Math class.

Books are often related to English and History classes but not so much in Math or Science. I want to change that. I want my class to be more than just a math class, but as also place of mathematical exploration and enhancement. This project is a good starting place for this idea. I hope to inspire students to be proactive in learning and practicing math outside the scope of their classes.
