The students in my Music as Literature course are interested in exploring music production and recording their lyrics and music. Recording equipment is very expensive, and few students have access to music studios to create beats or express themselves. Many of the students are very talented in poetry, spoken word, and rap. Many of the students have a background in music (band, orchestra, choir, etc.). This course is encouraging students to pursue their musical abilities and talents.
I also run a group called Beats & Bars that is devoted to writing and producing music.
These students will also be using the recording equipment.
My Project
I am requesting materials that will make recording songs a reality for my students. We have researched the basic necessities of a recording studio and are asking for the following resources to create it.
The Apple iMac computer is a necessary component of recording because it has all of the software and allows students to plug in all of the recording equipment to it.
Without the iMac, there is no studio, so this piece is essential. We are also asking for an iPad, so multiple students can create and edit music at a time. Another part that is also important is the audio interface, which connects the microphone to the computer; this piece of equipment transfers the vocal tracks into the software of the computer. The Akai Professional MPK MKII is a keyboard and a drum pad; students will be able to create their own drumbeats and melodies and export them in to the software on the iMac.
The speakers, microphone package, recording microphone, cables, headphones, speakers, and soundproofing panel will complete the studio. These pieces of equipment are also necessary in performing and recording songs.
All of this musical equipment will teach students how to record and edit beats and lyrics in order for them to create original songs.
