My Students

There is no one specific "typical day" in my classroom. As an English teacher in a diverse Brooklyn school, we do everything from reading and analyzing literature to drafting and creating original pieces of text. I'm a lifelong learner, and I want to both teach and learn from my students.

My school is known for its diversity.

We are located in a Brooklyn neighborhood just north of Coney Island. Several of our students are from foreign countries and are learning English. This is a challenge when the New York State English Language Arts exam is so very important in the 7th grade. As an English teacher, I try to keep my students interested and engaged while reading and practicing reading strategies. It helps to have new and current books when engaging 13-year-olds to read. Our school is rather large for a middle school, and we recently lost our Title 1 funding, which means finding the money in our budget for schools supplies, such as new books, can be difficult. That is what brought me to Donors Choose.

My Project

My students will use these new books as independent reading books. They will be able to each read the book of their choosing and will be responsible for writing responses based on their individual book. The reason independent reading is so important is that each child will be able to read a book on their appropriate level and each child will be appropriately challenged. It also enables my students to engage their unique interests by choosing their own book.

I have requested a number of new novels for my seventh grade classroom.

Some of the books I currently have in my classroom are very old and tattered. I find that almost daily I am taping and repairing the pages of the books that remain. By refilling my library with new and current books, my students will excitedly be able to read books that they are interested in and not have to worry about the condition of the books. I spoke to several of my students and asked them what books they wanted to read. It is from those discussions that I have made my selections here on Donors Choose. I know my students will appreciate and value these new additions to our library, as well as learn valuable life lessons and new vocabulary from these books.
