The students that would benefit from this grant are so very curious and eager to read about cultures other than their own. We are located in a rural area where the demographic is very consistent. My honors class loves to participate in novel studies. So far this year, they have read "Speak" and are currently reading "Of Mice and Men." My class consists of 26 students that love to read. I love seeing what new books they bring to class to use during free time!
These students have taught me about so many different books that I have never heard of, and probably wouldn't have looked twice at had they not made these books sound so intriguing!
They deserve to read modern and interesting literature that we can discuss as a whole class rather than focusing on individual texts. Reading should be fun for them. These students want to read novels that challenge them and make them want to grow as individuals, and I want to be able to provide them with just that,
My Project
These books will help my students learn both at home and at school. My school has a very limited amount of text sets for students to use in each grade. Most of the novels that they do have are fairly old. I want to introduce my students to new literature that is fun and engaging to young readers. I plan to use An Ember in the Ashes to introduce students to a new genre that they may not have read in class before. This novel does a great job exploring unreliable characters. I want to use The Hate U Give to do a Social Emotional unit with my honors class. In this area, racism and police brutality are not a social issue that they witness every day. They want to learn more about these issues, and this book would be the perfect way to introduce the topic in a way that they could understand.
Reading is one of the most important ways that students can be exposed to new experiences and places that they may never have the chance to see.
In my classroom I try to encourage students to appreciate the information they can find in novels. This is hard to do when the only novels they have to choose from are falling apart or older works of literature.
Getting close to the end of this semester, students are beginning to lose interest and feel burned out. Even the avid readers need extra encouragement right now. I believe that by using young adult novels that are fairly new and entertaining to teach high level concepts will help restore their interest in reading
