This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is the first year that a quilting class has been offered at our school. As far as I can tell from copious online research, it's only offered at two other schools in the nation. Forty two students pack this class and are eager to explore this traditional craft and learn hand sewing skills.

My students range from 9th to 12th grade at an inner city, low socio economic school in one of the largest cities.

This year our school received an extra $2 million in funding to offer enrichment and intervention to our struggling students. Imagine my delight to be able to teach quilting during the school day! My joy increased as kids elected to take the class. My maximum class size (42) has been reached as boys and girls are spreading the word about learning to hand sew, create art quilts, and develop their own style as they explore this traditional craft.

My Project

A quarter inch is the crux of most quilting projects. I currently have 10 quarter inch rulers that 39 students share. At most times, someone is waiting for a ruler to continue with their project. Our quilting time is brief, just 54 minutes a day, so I would rather maximize this time and minimize time wasters, like waiting for a ruler. We are also sharing 10 thread scissors, which adds time as students seek out who had the scissors last. Both of these items will help us to increase our project time.

Decreasing wait time for quilting basics like rulers and scissors will increase quilt time and allow students more time to explore this craft and build their skill base.

Students will be able to remain focused on their project.
