Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 150 high school students English at Downtown Magnets High School, where most of my students are Latino, African-American, and Asian. They would love to use technology in the classroom...and state and federal laws require that they use technology in the classroom...and yet all we have in my classroom is an overhead projector and one computer (for the teacher)! I am therefore requesting help to purchase one multimedia projector. This technology will benefit my students in many ways, including: • Teacher and students could give Power Point presentations to teach each other about vocabulary (roots, affixes, origins, definitions, usage), literature (report, analyze, critique), research topics (for expository writing), and persuasive writing. Power Point presentations provide students with audio/visual information to enhance learning. Audio/visual information is especially helpful for English Language Learners (of which I have many) and students with Special Needs. • Teacher and students could explore and present internet research. Such research is useful for writing persuasive and expository essays. A projector would also enable us to analyze the most effective strategies for doing research on the internet. • Teacher and students could present television and film clips as examples of various literary devices. For example, such clips could be used to represent different persuasive techniques used in advertising, courtroom dramas, and political commentaries. Clips could be used to represent how symbolism and metaphors are used in films and advertising. And in classic dramas such as Romeo and Juliet, selected scenes from different film versions of the play could be used to show different interpretations of a text. The No Child Left Behind policy and State standards require teachers to incorporate technology into classroom instruction. We do have occasional access to a computer lab where students can research the internet and write, but we do not have any way to present our research and writing to the class. So if I ask my students to create a Power Point presentation, for example, there is no way for them to show us their work in class. A multimedia projector would greatly enhance my students' access to technology. Research shows that students learn most effectively when they are given opportunities to instruct others and to apply what they have learned to real world situations. They will need effective research, communication, and presentation skills in order to thrive in our competitive world. One multimedia projector will provide the opportunity for 150 of my students every year to constantly practice and hone those skills, and to succeed in their lives after graduation. After only five years, this technology will have helped about 750 students to succeed! I understand that a multimedia projector is costly, but I assure you that this technology will be constantly used in my English classroom to benefit all of our students. The benefits of this technology in our classroom will far outweigh the costs.
