Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

New York City Public School 56 Queens is a Title I school, with approximately 70 percent of the student body eligible for free lunch. Our school has the good fortune to have been rewired for Internet connectivity, and in addition to access to our network, we have a digital camera and camcorder to take the photos and videos for student projects. Our fifth-grade students need a means of editing those videos and photos on our computers so that projects can reflect students' best work. Manageable file size is also important, making editing essential. Students are taught to revise and edit their writing; we believe this necessity applies to both digital video and photography. Limited online storage space for our Web-based projects underscores this editing need. Until now most video editing software has been beyond the financial reach of the classroom, but with video online becoming increasingly popular, the technology has become more accessible (easier for students to acquire mastery) and more affordable. Our classroom works on both Apple and PC platforms, which offers students an opportunity to understand the strengths of each platform as they increase their use of technology. Both Apple and Adobe (PC based) are ideal for our classroom, with their dual platform solutions (Apple's Final Cut Express and Adobe Photoshop 5.0 and Premiere 3.0 Video Editing package). We hope to be able to edit our videos and photos on more than one machine. One copy of the Apple software and 3 copies of the Adobe software for PCs would be fabulous so that 4 groups could work simultaneously on existing equipment. We will have 2 new Apple laptops with which to work and some limited editing feature will exist on one of them. For that reason we'll only need one fopy of Apple's Final Cut Express. We have more PC laptops but realistically anticipate the ability to edit on 3 of those PCs at any one time. For this reason, we would be thrilled if our students could learn to use the one Apple Final Cut Express in tandem with three copies of Adobe's Photoshop 5.0 and Premiere 3.0 Video Editing package. Imagine 4 groups of students simultaneously acquiring cross-platform video editing skills in a collaborative environment to produce online digital literacy portfolios--definitely a twenty-first-century approach to collaborative learning! Should we have the good fortune to receive support for our request, we'd be happy to send Donors Choose video-clip photos using the software (or even the URL where we have posted student work!) should a donor agree that this is worthy of support.
