I am a first year teacher in Garland, Texas. Unfortunately this means I have very few, if any, resources to teach reading with. I teach 22 students who range academically from special ed. to gifted. I am in a grade where high stakes testing in reading determines the promotion of each student. I love every minute of my career but I feel inadequately prepared.
I would love to have more resource materials in reading that would not only target specific reading skills but also target specific reading levels. Each student advances their abilities at their own pace. With various leveled materials, I can ensure that every student is working on the activities that will individually benefit them the greatest. Also, by targeting specific reading skills I can set up reading centers within my classroom and give the students the opportunity to experience several skills every day.
Giving my students every possible experience and learning situation to advance their own knowledge of reading is important to me. By receiving these resource materials, it would not only prepare my students but would also equip myself for years to come.
