My Students

I teach 6th grade classroom guidance as a daily elective at Waccamaw Intermediate School. Our school is located in a very diverse area, and our population reflects this diversity. My students come from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds. I serve all 6th grade students, and the academic levels range from gifted and talented students to special education students. As a “guidance” elective, my classes learn about financial literacy, careers, job skills, soft skills, and other real-life applications that students need to be successful for their futures. In our classroom, I provide opportunities for my students to learn in an informal setting. My students respond best when I present instruction through motivating and engaging learning experiences.

My class introduces financial literacy by incorporating classroom jobs, banking, and the real-world dilemma of budgeting money - skills every person needs for their future!

Learning about money shouldn’t be a chore, it needs to be engaging and meaningful! Students learn how to plan for the future, make wise choices with money, and manage their financial resources.

My Project

My yearlong “econ” unit introduces students to financial literacy, and learn how to plan for the future, make wise choices with money, and manage their financial resources Students begin the year by learning about classroom jobs, and then completing job applications to apply for the job they seek. Some examples of classroom jobs are bankers, police officers, custodians, cooks, and cashiers. Once students are hired, they do these jobs throughout the school year. Of course, students earn money, or are paid a salary for doing their job. Students are taught about banking, depositing/withdrawing, and managing their money to make sure the transactions are correct. Payday is every three weeks, and students receive their paychecks to deposit into their personal bank accounts, managed by their classroom banker. The classroom bankers (about 5 students) keep bank ledgers for about 4 of their classmate’s finances throughout the year. Throughout the three week period, students can buy items from our school store. Our school store sells a variety of things, but the largest event is buying popcorn on Fridays. Students choose from a menu, popcorn seasonings, amounts, and other options that all vary in price. Along with the school store expenses, each student must pay rent on their seat every week. Therefore, students must learn to budget the money in their bank accounts for three weeks’ worth of expenses. If they blow all of their money right after their paycheck, they can’t buy items until they get paid again! At the end of the year, whatever money they have saved is turned into credit to spend at the school wide end of the year festival.

Learning money shouldn’t be a chore, it needs to be engaging and meaningful!
