Last year, our school decided to create a brand new English class for seniors. We noticed that many seniors struggled with the traditional English/Language Arts/Literature course. In an effort to engage, inspire, and educate more students, we came up with more of a Humanities course option for our seniors.
The essential question of the course is "How can I communicate my message to the world?" Throughout the first semester, we have examined a number of ways people communicate their message to the world in an effort to better the world we live in.
The students have looked at how people communicate their message through social movements, political actions, creative modes, and through their career.
All of this prepares them for second semester where they decide what impact they want to make on society and how they want to communicate that message. Students spend the semester researching and creating a service/action based project that has them actually begin to make their mark on the world.
These students are hardworking seniors getting ready to go out into the real world. They are excited about their learning. This class provides them with an opportunity to begin to make their mark on their world.
My Project
Often times, students get hung up on one of two choices in life: Should they do what they love? Or do what is practical? The graphic novel, "Level Up" shows the journey the protagonist goes through to find his passion through his career. My students are seniors who are getting ready to go out into the real world. This class asks students to think about the impact they want to make on society and how they can make their passions part of their careers. My students will be designing a semester long project that details the changes they want to make, and actually asks them to start making this impact by building relationships to set them in the right direction.
This novel will provide my students with a fun, engaging example of how someone can use their passions to motivate them to find a successful place in their future.
We will be reading this novel in class to motivate students to begin thinking about their projects. Through reading this engaging text, students will hopefully begin to understand how someone uses their passions to impact society. This novel will show them that it is possible to do both. This novel provides them with the steps and encouragement to begin working on their own senior project to use their passions in their future career.
