My students need literature that is not only relevant to their own lives, but also that spreads across a wide range of reading levels. The range in backgrounds and proficiency within these five classes is immense.

My Students
My students are hard-working, inquisitive, and want to succeed.
They report feeling safe and supported at this school, and in this community.
KMS is unique because it brings together students of all different cultures, races, and socioeconomic backgrounds, resulting in a high level of diversity across the board within a single classroom. Students are enthusiastic about their schoolwork and the many opportunities that they encounter in this middle school.
I have a variety of students within my five classes, from a range of backgrounds (African American, Hispanic, Caucasian, Asian American, etc.) to their reading levels (measured from second grade reading proficiency all the way to college-level) and need texts to support each of them!
My Project
The demographics of KMS are rare and revolutionary, representing a variety of backgrounds, socioeconomic statuses, ethnicities and student interests. This academic body inherently requires a diverse set of literature at their disposal, with a wide range of reading levels represented to match both the advanced and regular English classes within one room. Having this type of writing material at their fingertips would be a major influence on how much these students read.
Our goal throughout all five classes is to increase our literacy levels by two grade levels and read five thousand pages by the end of the academic year - a steep, but attainable goal.
In order to do this, we must have a multitude of perspectives represented in our classroom library, as well as a large spectrum of literacy levels. The selection of pieces that I have outlined include several texts our librarian has seen 8th grade adolescents enjoy over the years, a few series that students have already requested I acquire for our classroom library, and texts from authors or about identities that resemble the make-up of our middle school demographics. The list showcases a wide range of reading levels to meet as many students where they are as possible!
