My Students
One of the greatest skills I can help my students gain, in AP English or in theatre is the skill of confidence! The ability to get up in front of a group and present your ideas is invaluable and my goal is to help students gain confidence in their ability to do so.
This year I have a broad spectrum of students.
My juniors are all enrolled in the AP Language and composition class. They are driven and bold and the makeup of the class is diverse- each student bringing unique experiences and perspectives to this highly collaborative classroom.
My freshman and wide eyed and excited as they begin high school. They are all taking theatre all year long and will be trying an assortment of theatre experiences through the year. In addition to acting and group performance students will be asked to present thinking and ideas as well as cultivating the skill of facilitation, leading others in an exchange of ideas to develop new perspectives.
Our school is focused on the development of skills related to technology, but by offering students experiences through the humanities will only make their ability to navigate different world, stronger.
My Project
A podium to some may be viewed as a crutch but when used well can be a place of strength. It offers students a scaffold where they can gain confidence standing in front of their peers and sharing their work and ideas and hopefully work to be able to step around the podium someday to connect with their audience in new ways.
In AP, throughout the year students will be asked to share a plethora of their writing. A podium will offer the structure and security to share their work with out having to stand in the front of the room, holing papers in their hand or a laptop. It is the example of experience they will have in college and beyond in the career of their choosing.
In theatre, students will will begin to gain confidence being in front of a room by using the podium as a home base to share from; a sort of safety net to hold them up as they being to explore theatrical performance and presentation of work.
By donating to this project you will help to provide students with the opportunity to build confidence and strength while developing their own voice, first in the classroom and beyond in life.
While some may see a podium as a barrier between people, I see it as a stepping stone to a world of collaboration and innovation.
