My Students
Lovers! My students are lovers of all things historical! They are inquisitive, eager 9th graders who crave bragging rights after conquering a classic. They are low-income, at-risk students from Southern California and many of them will be the first in their family to graduate high school. This room holds ESL learners as well. These students are in the lowest English class offered at our school but high standards and high lexile level texts are still happening in our classroom. The excitement in the faces of these two classes are just contagious and inspiring and really, unique.
My Project
The passion of Shakespeare is already present in this room but actual books? Not quite. The students have yet to have a real copy of Romeo and Juliet in their hands. Providing them with this novel will be just like handing them a map through the Elizabethan era! They have all heard of this play but they haven't experienced it firsthand just yet. Unfortunately, the copies we have in the classroom require them to partner up as we only have half of the copies needed, and many pages are missing since these copies are over 14 years old. This makes it hard to set the stage and act this play out if not everyone has a copy.
