I am a third grade teacher in a rural farming community in Michigan. We service mostly low socioeconomic families as well as migrant students.
Right now in our classroom we have shower board that has been screwed on top of the old chalk boards. There are three problems with the shower board, the first being that it is not magnetic.
With limited wall space in a classroom it is sometimes necessary to hang chart paper on the board when we are making lists or completing graphic organizers. Thus I have to tape them to the shower board. Unfortunately, most tape takes the top layer off of the shower board, and the sticky putty leaves a residue that ruins the board. If we had a magnetic white board it would solve this problem. It would also make it easier to transition from one thing to the next.
Secondly, after about 10 years of use the shower board does not erase well. In order to erase the board I must use a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, and then a towel to dry it off before I can write on it again. This wastes a ton of time in the classroom.
Lastly, the shower board currently in my room is only 8 ft. long and also serves as the overhead screen. This causes problems because I am constantly erasing and drying the board to transition back and forth between the board and the overhead. Again, this is a huge time waster.
The maker board that I am requesting will solve all of these problems. Not only is it an actual dry erase board, it is magnetic and 12 feet long giving me the space I need in order to utilize the board and overhead at the same time.
With your help, it will ensure that the students that come through my classroom for years to come will spend less time watching me erase and dry the shower board and spend more time learning.
