My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school district, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences. When they come into my theatre classroom it becomes a world that has no restrictions on them. They are allowed to be themselves and understand that they will be loved here regardless of who they are.
They show me every day that what makes an effective teacher is someone who personally invests in their students.
These kids are hungry for someone to care about them and to help them see their self-worth. That is why I am in this profession, these kids need heroes and sometimes just sometimes instead of capes, they have chalk stained hands.
My Project
This year, I decided to do away with desks! In a theatre classroom I found them to be constricting and didn’t allow us to really move in the space. That being side my kids need a place to write notes and to take tests! We are on our feet constantly in my classroom but there are days that they need to write and while those days are few and far between they’re still vital to my classroom.
Having tables will provide them the final piece that we are missing in my room.
These tables with not only give them a place to do their written work but also afford them the opportunity to make room for games or other exercises. My classroom also serves as the Green Room for my plays and musicals, these tables with give us extra room for students to do their makeup and to relax before it is time to hit the stage!
