This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Providing for the needs of my special education students is challenging at times, but yet the most rewarding. I have the honor of teaching them specific skills and watching them grow and develop in both social and academic areas. To support the needs of my students, I am mindful of creating a positive and nurturing learning environment to suit the unique needs of my students. My students have cognitive and social delays, thus it is important to teach them self-calming strategies, like using a calm corner, when they are upset or anxious.
A classroom should be a safe place where a student can calm themselves using pre-taught calming strategies for a period of time.
A calm corner is a quiet place in the classroom where my students can go briefly to take a break from a frustrating task or over-stimulating activity. Keeping the calm corner inside my classroom helps to ensure that that behavior does not become an avoidance tactic for difficult tasks. It also helps to promote and encourage self-calming strategies. With the calm corner, my students will be able to take a break in private with the welcoming nature-themed canopy. As they sit to relax on the soft pillows, they can explore paperback books and photo cards to help them recognize and express their feelings!
The donations to this project will help to improve my students' ability in managing their emotions and reducing stress, which in return will lead to better focus and engagement in learning activities, leading to improved academic performance.
