Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My desire is to instill a lifelong love for books and reading so my students can make a difference in the world. My students' faces shine with pride when they find high-interest books they relate to and are able to read independently.

I teach 26 active, energetic third graders who range in their academic abilities.

All of my students qualify for free or reduced lunch. A majority of my students are English Language Learners, coming from homes that speak a language other than English. Families want more than anything to see their children succeed, but they often lack resources to.

By putting basic supplies in my classroom, I will be able to design and modify lessons to meet the needs of my students.

My Project

A typical day in our classroom is strongly centered around literacy. My students love to read and get very excited when it is time for literacy in the classroom. The majority of my students come from low-income families with little to no parent involvement.

Over half my class is English Language Learners, meaning English is not their first language.

Because of these factors, the majority of my students are very behind where a typical 2nd grade student should be. My students are some of the sweetest kids who all have a desire to learn and to succeed.

Small-group instruction is a very important part of our day. Every day I do differentiated small-group guided reading lessons with my students. The lessons are differentiated at each group's level to help reach them where they are at. This helps them to be as successful as they can be with their learning.

Right now, for small-group lessons, we use two trapezoid tables put together. With the way that the table is set up, it makes it very difficult for me to reach each student. Some students end up being very far away from me and it is hard to listen to them read and to teach them the skills that they are lacking.

The easels will be used to model and teach reading, writing, and math. Your donation will be helping 26 eager and caring children learn how to read with a developmentally appropriate hands-on approach. These tabletop easels would allow my students to manipulate words and letters. Students will be better able to participate in interactive writing and phonics instruction.
