Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Growing up, my favorite thing in school was story time. Sitting with all my classmates and listening to my teacher read and act out stories was the best part of any day. Unfortunately, without a cozy place to meet, my students are not getting the chance to experience this amazing part of learning.
My students are energetic and have such a passion for learning.
Most of my students are Hispanic and second language learners. Meeting their needs is sometimes challenging but I have found something that most of them love, regardless of the language barriers. My students LOVE read-alouds. Most of the time read-alouds are done with me standing in front of the room, while the students sit at their desks. The students enjoy story time, however, by the time I begin reading many of them are restless from sitting at their desks all day. I don't blame them! I have tried countless ways to get them together, from moving desks, to moving chairs, to even having them sit on the floor...EEK! All of these scenarios never seem to be too comfortable.
My Project
I would love a rug that I could have all my students sit on. A place where we could meet daily in the morning for morning news and updates. I can teach mini lessons on the rug before sending them off to work independently. I would love for my students to have a place they could go to and read independently or in small groups. A classroom rug can create opportunities for a change of setting (even if its just from their desks). I would like to read-aloud chapter books to my students, hopefully continuing to instill in them a love for reading. I imagine the rug as not only a place for read-alouds but also a place for sharing and discussions. I feel that a rug creates an environment of openness where the kids feel comfortable sharing with one another.
Your donations would be appreciated by every child that enters my classroom.
Your donations would allow my students and I to have the chance to share more openly with each other and have the opportunity to gather together as a school family. I know that a classroom rug will give my students the chance to fall in love with reading the way I did growing up. I want my students to be able to grow up and remember a book I read to them, that they fell in love with, all those years ago.
