Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Reading is a challenge to some of my students and with some help and encouragement they often find a spot to read in my classroom, but that isn't always easy! Many of my students have to find a space that is quiet and comfortable to get in the zone to read with few distractions.

My school is a wonderful high school that is internship and advisory based.

We are in an urban setting in which many of my students have to face challenges at home and in the community. I feel my school is an oasis for my students where they are encouraged to follow their passions, do well academically and have adults who know them well. My students are smart and caring teens who have bright futures and I want to do everything I can to help them find their way.

My Project

We have small classrooms in our school, but I know that I can give my students a cozy quiet space to read. I will have a comfy chair and a matching rug along with a cart that will have books to choose from. This space will be near a window in which there is plenty of natural lighting. It will be very inviting to the reader who needs a space to focus.

Having a love of reading and being able to do it well is so important to success in college and in life.

It is a gift not all students have--and that should not be the case. Although it does not guarantee they will love reading it will show them that I care that they read and they are important enough to give them the space they need. This is a gift my classroom that will touch many lives for many years to come.
