Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our class is made up of a multilingual and global community of innovators, thinkers, and wonderers. They love sarcasm, Would You Rathers, and suspenseful read alouds. Over half the class speaks a language other than English at home and all of them are thoughtful navigators through our multicultural world.
As children growing up in a high-poverty area, my students have inherited many challenging realities in their community, such as homelessness, chronic unemployment, and mass incarceration--all of which can hinder the caring adults in their lives from supporting their students' education in the ways they wish to.
65% of my students enter my classroom below grade level, with some as far behind as 4 grades. This is not their actuality, but it is their reality. I believe in the intentional investment of people like you who know these students to be agents of the future and who support their growth towards that endeavor.
My Project
Last year the only place in my classroom where I was able to meet with students was a small round table that could only fit three students at a time. This made it very difficult to differentiate instruction based on the needs of my students, as I was limited to either whole class instruction or one on one conferences.
My students deserve a place in their classroom where they can receive dedicated reading instruction tailored to their individual needs.
This guided reading table will better enable me to pull groups of students with similar areas of growth and facilitate reading discussions that guide their strategy development.
The rest of the supplies will also facilitate my guided reading instruction, from Post-It notes that students can use to take notes in their books to better storage systems for papers needed by different groups.
