My Students

Welcome to our room! We are self-reliant learners who, in the words of Mr. Rogers, expect and accept mistakes every day. Our class represents the diversity of the San Francisco Bay Area and of our community in particular, which is by far the most diverse district in Marin County. Many students are English learners and our school is a Title I school, meaning at least 40% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

In my classroom, I make a commitment to each family that their child's needs will be met, as an individual, to the best of my ability.

"Individualized" and "child-centered" learning have become buzzwords in education, but for me, treating each child as an individual is truly the cornerstone of my practice. I know that what happens to a child outside of my classroom is just as important and influential as what happens within it. As such, I strive to create a learning space that honors who my students are at home, in their own communities, and in the school community.

**Please note that my school is no longer a charter school, despite its categorization on DonorsChoose.

My Project

My first graders have returned for full-time, in-person learning. I am thrilled to have them at school! The vast majority only attended in-person Kindergarten for 3 months last year, and I need a new seating strategy to help them be able to sit together through our lessons, class meetings, and read alouds, while maintaining a safe distance from one another. My current gathering area has a rug with no designated places, so students are not provided the scaffolds they need to respect one another's space and stay in their "bubble." This is especially critical for my students with developmental delays and my students on the autism spectrum.

I want to do everything in my power to avoid putting my students in their desks all day long, because it is not developmentally appropriate, and does not foster a sense of closeness and community that a closer gathering space does.

The rug I am requesting will allow students to remain 3 feet apart while being in community with each other and with me. This will allow them to learn how to "turn and talk" with a neighbor, easily see all learning materials, and stay engaged and distraction-free through lessons -- all of which is much more difficult or impossible at their desks. COVID has undermined or altogether eliminated many of the most joyous aspects of being at school, and I don't want my gathering area to be another one. Please help us get a rug so we can be together, learning and collaborating, safely!
