This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 23 first grade students in my classroom for the 2018-2019 school year. The students in my classroom are part of the student body at Cummings Elementary school in Houston, TX. The statistics of Cummings Elementary are listed below from the 2016-2017 school year.
70.9% of students were considered at risk of dropping out of school.
32.5% of students were enrolled in bilingual and English language learning programs.
The students at Cummings Elementary were also affected by Hurricane Harvey last fall of 2017, which was the devastating for many families and left many residents in the area in need of basic necessities, and many homes were lost in the floods. This diverse demographic of students and staff are looking forward to a fresh start this school year!
My Project
With this chosen carpet, my students will be able to all sit together on one carpet area during whole group time. This includes during reading, writing, math, social studies, and science - and not to mention during read alouds!
My students currently do not fit on our classroom carpets, and I would love for everyone to have their own spot on the carpet.
My students will be able to focus better, knowing they have an assigned spot and will be able to listen attentively rather than worry about where they are going to sit next time and if there will be any room.
