A Place for Everyone, Everyone in Their Place

My students need to have designated spots when seated on the floor for whole group instruction. This carpet has rows of colored squares perfect for small group work.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom involves a lot of singing, moving and involvement in our learning. My kids believe that they are "learners."

I have a kindergarten class of 24 students, half of which will not turn 6 until late summer.

Most of my students entered Kindergarten with no previous school experience and come from low-income families. Language development is a huge issue, so we spend time reading stories, learning rhymes and talking, talking, talking.

My Project

The schoolwide reading program requires whole group instruction. Embedded into the instructional time, there are opportunities for small group and partner work, as well. The rug I would like to get has 30 different colored squares. The squares would give each child their own spot for whole group and I would be able to assign groups of students colors which would make small group activities go much more smoothly. For example, "Everyone sitting on a red square,...."

This rug would allow each child to have their own "spot," which is very important to young children.

Classroom management is cut to a minimum when each student knows where to sit and begin the learning of the day.
