In our elementary school library, we use shelf markers when searching for books. Shelf markers look like rulers but are thinner and more flexible. Students slide their shelf marker next to the book they want on the shelf and leave it there while they look at the book. If they decide they don't want to read the book and they forget where the book goes, the shelf marker has marked the spot where they should put it back! This helps keep our library organized, but sometimes students are so excited to find a book they forget to use the shelf stick.
We're asking for enough shelf sticks that every student in the school can have their own to decorate and put their name on.
Having a shelf stick that they get to customize is exciting and makes them more likely to use their shelf stick. Having a piece of the library that is just theirs for the year helps them feel a sense of ownership and accountability for taking care of the library too! We're making sleeves that the students can decorate and then put over the shelf sticks, so we can keep reusing the shelf sticks every year.
