My Students

"A picture is worth a thousand words" refers to the notion that a complex idea can be conveyed with just a single still image. I teach 4th grade at a NYC Public School in a low-income/high needs area. My class is made up of about 95% English Language Learners and the other 5% are former ELLs.

My students are highly motivated to learn.

When presented with new knowledge their faces brim with happiness and hands shoot up ready to ask tons of questions. However, as English Language Learners, they need tons of visuals to be able to learn the new language and simultaneously comprehend the curriculum.

My Project

Unfortunately due to budget cuts, we do not have all the visuals required to aid them with comprehension. Many of them can’t even go to the public library because their parents come home too late after working double shifts or very long hours. A color printer will bring the curriculum to life. They can print pictures to go with new vocabulary words, and they can better understand concepts such as why and how do animals camouflage. In general, they will be able to to absorb new and large amounts of data quickly.

A color printer will enable my students to understand and learn new concepts presented to them.

As a result, they will improve their English language skills as well as learn and comprehend the very demanding curriculum.
