My Students

I teach an energetic kindergarten class of English Language Learners in an inner city public school in Michigan. Our school has a high percentage of at risk students; approximately 82% of our students receive free or reduced lunch. All of my students are excited about learning but because of a shortage in reading materials, teaching kindergarten has been a difficult task. In addition to that, a large number of my students don't have access to reading books and literacy tools at home, making it hard for them to practice reading independently outside of school.

My Project

Have you ever been in a different country and didn't know the language or have resources to help you learn it? Well, that's how my students feel.

Cutbacks in academic materials and supplies has plagued our school district and my students may never get the reading materials they need to learn and develop literacy skills so they can become fluent readers and soar academically.

Our classroom library has limited reading books to help my students learn to read and develop oral language skills. The awesome reading materials I've selected will create a cozy inviting reading environment in my classroom where students can find fun engaging books that they'll love reading and sharing with their peers more than once, not to mention build vocabulary skills and ultimately develop a love for reading. There is no telling what they can accomplish if given these resources!
