A Picture Is Worth a 1,000 English Words

Help me give my students a colored printer and document camera to provide vibrant images and activities for individualized learning paths to help foster enhance vocabulary, literacy skills and English language acquisition.

My Project

I am the lead English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher at a Title I elementary school, which presents a complexity of obstacles including poverty, limited resources both at home and school, under developed literacy skills and low English language proficiency. These barriers have grave implications on future life and academic success if not addressed as early as elementary school.

Unlike core content areas, ESL teachers do not have the luxury of curriculum guides or a standard set of resources, because the services we provide are catered to the individual demands of students based on their unique language needs.

For this reason, strict printing limits and black and white copying becomes problematic. A color printer with low-cost ink would allow me to bring vocabulary and foreign concepts to life by providing vibrant relatable images that will build connections for retention. Serving 137 students limits the amount of time I can spend with each student, so it is imperative that I provide resources students can use while I am not physically present. In addition to printed resources such as teacher created workbooks, a document camera would allow me to create digital lessons and recorded concept modeling to enhance English language acquisition.

Acquiring the English language has positive implications for students that expand well beyond academic success. The majority of my students are second generation immigrants. For this reason, as their English language proficiency grows, they are relied on heavily by the elders of their family and community to interpret for those who speak no English. Obtaining this life skills not only prepares them to be of assistance to their family, but opens them up to unique career opportunities such as interpreters.
