This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Geoffrey Willans said: "You can never understand one language until you understand at least two." I believe this is the essence of why I teach English As A Second Language.
My students are first and second graders in an elementary school in South Philadelphia.
They are eager learners, and come to school each day with a curiosity that motivates them to ask questions and make connections with what they read and the world around them. Since they speak English As A Second Language, their ability to find the right word to express themselves is often challenging. They may know the word in their first language, but not in English. Thus, providing an age-appropriate, visual representation of academic and social words will bridge the gap between what they know and what they are trying to say.
My Project
These picture dictionaries will help students in all aspects of English language learning. From alphabetizing to spelling, students will be exposed to words and pictures that will provide a foundation for comprehending new concepts and expressing themselves. In listening, students will be able to follow directions to find new words. In reading they will locate definitions for these words. In speaking, students will share what they know. In writing they will now be able to spell new words correctly.
Donations to this project will dramatically improve the quality of instruction in our classroom.
Students will be able to take ownership of their learning by locating words to add to their lexicon and will have fun doing so.
