My Students
As a school with refugee services available, my classroom has a rich diversity. Over 50 languages are spoken in our school, representing several nations in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, Central America, and South America. Some of my 5th grade students have attended schools in the US for many years, while others have only recently arrived. Many had to overcome challenging situations to get to my classroom.
Ever curious about their world, my students bring a global perspective to their learning and understanding.
They have an extraordinary enthusiasm for school and an awe-inspiring respect for learning. Their varied learning experiences bring a richness to classroom work, group activities, and explorations.
My Project
Good story telling can be found in many forms. Graphic novels provide access to stories by combining images and text. Images combined with text can bring deeper nuances to the story. Stories become richer and more dynamic as the images and text work together. Abstract skills such as synethsizing and inferencing are supported with graphic novels.
Graphic novels elevate reading comprehension for both emerging and advanced readers.
For my emerging readers, including second language learners, this evens the playing field. For my advanced readers, graphic novels allow them have have deeper and more complex relationships with the stories.
