This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This year my Special Education Class is filled with a group of sweet, kind students who are eager to learn phonics, decoding, and reading skills. Our school is a Title I school, meaning all students receive free breakfast and lunch. The majority of our families are English language learners and look to the school and teacher for tools to help their child not only academically, but socially as well. We truly are a family in our small, but mighty class. Each student.has their ability level as well as individual needs that must be met throughout the day to help them succeed. We have an amazing team of teachers, co-teachers, and paraprofessionals who work diligently to meet our students differing needs. All our students have the potential to learn to decode and read fluently as well as comprehend texts.
They learn these skills best through a multi-sensory approach where they can use movement, sound, and tools to help them learn letter sounds, decode words, and build their confidence in reading.
When we incorporate mindfulness, yoga, dance, body movement, songs, and tactile objects into our lessons, our students are engaged, happy, and excited to learn. Using different tools such as games, letter boards, wipe-off paddles, alphabet chips, and sorting trays along with sensory toys and fidgets increases their ability to remain focused to obtain the skills required to decode and use letter sounds to read fluently.
By creating a warming, engaging, and fun classroom environment, students can be themselves and show us their amazing personalities. They feel successful and gain the confidence needed to achieve their goals and grow academically, emotionally, and socially.
