Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My pre-k students come from a very low-socioeconomic community. The majority of my parents don't have the money to provide their children with a pet. Also, sometimes taking care of a pet is very costly. Therefore, I would like to give my children the opportunity to own a pet.

My children are 4 year-Olds who are very active and curious about their surroundings.

My school is pre-k to 5th grade. My classroom is composed of bilingual children who are for the first time introduced to the English language. We need lots of visuals, hands-on and creative projects to help them learn their second language. We are going through drastic budget cuts and as a result the school is cutting into our basic resources and materials. As a teacher, I am sadly obligated to give up fun and creative projects and to spend my money to buy basic materials such as pens, paper, pencils, notebooks to help my students. Therefore, I am not able to spend money to buy a fish tank. These children are very young and they desperately need pets to see them grow. They need creative ways to open their imagination. A Pet is essential in a pre-k classroom.

My Project

A fish tank will help my children learn about fish and their habitats. They also will have a real pet in their classroom. They will be able to talk about their pet. Also, This will inspired them to use all their senses to describe what they observe. Every morning, they will have the opportunity to look at their fish tank and verbally and through pictures, they will be able to express what they think, see, feel, smell and like about their pet.

Most of my children lack the resources to have a real pet at home.

Their language is limited. exposing them to real animals and making them owners of a real pet will open their minds and ability to learn. Having a fish tank will make their classroom more excited. They will have the opportunity to learn about an animal at a very young age.
