A Personal Space for Every Student

My Students

By the year's end, I want my students to understand how to learn. A big challenge to this is understanding personal space. When students are in each other's personal spaces, distractions abound and learning is more difficult. A rug will greatly minimize these distractions and enhance learning.

My students are a diverse, fun group of students attending a low-income Title I school.

They love learning and are excited to come to school each day. This young group of students has come a long way from the beginning of the year. Each of their unique personalities makes learning an exciting adventure every day!

My Project

We have morning meeting, whole group instruction, and story time on our makeshift rug. My students, being very young still, are just learning to understand personal space. My students need to feel like they have their own little "room." A spot on a seating rug can give them this feeling. It's a place where they can feel safe. When students feel safe, they can learn. Right now our "rug" is two smaller rugs placed together with squares taped off for each student to sit on. The tape is very tempting for my group of younger students to pull off. When this occurs, the physical boundaries are gone, and it's very tempting for another student to enter another student's "room." This is very distracting to students trying to learn. A seating rug would eliminate the tape being pulled off and students would still have physical boundaries.

A seating rug will give each of my students a "room" of their own at school.

It will help them feel more like they are at a home away from home. It will minimize distractions and increase learning time. Students will feel more comfortable and love learning even more than they already do.
