My students need a class set of A People's History of the United States to supplement their assigned textbook, and a large wall map is also needed to effectively teach US Geography.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Generally speaking and according to LAUSD’s Data, the 2016-17 current enrollment at Ramon C. Cortines High School is approximately 1,500 students. We have 1,041 female students (68.5%) and 478 males (31.5%). The current student population is approximately 70.4% Hispanic, 8.4% Black, 5.5% Asian, 3.3% Filipino, and11.1% White. 75% of our students are living below the poverty line, so the school has been designated as school-wide Title 1. The Federal Free and Reduced Lunch Program serves 100% of the total school population. 21.8% of the students are designated as gifted in arts or academics. About 7% benefit from special education services. 5.4% are designated as Limited English Profi cient (LEP), 80.5% of the LEP population has been LEP for more than 5 years and therefore is labeled Long-term English Learner (LTEL). 42% of our students have been reclassified English language Proficient (RFEP).
It is important to know that our students are interested in the Arts: Music, Dance, Visual and Theatre.
My Project
This year I am trying to go beyond the textbook. The Los Angeles Unified School district has not updated history texts in over 10 years. This project will put new text books in the hands of my students. Furthermore, the textbook version of US history is limited, often leaving out important events and people that should be studied and understood if one is to have a deep understanding of our past.
My students need a history book that explores history through the lives of ordinary people: "A People's History of the United States" by Howard Zinn fills that need.
They will be interacting with a text that is based on primary resources, letters, diaries and journals entries written by the people who experienced history firsthand. Students can then form their own opinions on the events and people that shaped this country, giving them a deeper understanding of our past.
