Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th thru 8th and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically our students are approximately 87% minorities with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander.
We have a variety of different learning challenges and needs that our students deal with on a daily basis.
Twenty-five percent of our students are currently an English Language Learner. Our Special Education students make up 10% of the entire site. We are working hard to ensure that all of our students get their needs met.
My Project
I use my Ipad I got through DonorsChoose almost every day in my classroom. I use it in my small groups to ensure that all students have access to a fun way to learn to read. In my small groups, we work on reading and writing to help build up my student's foundational skills. I use my Ipad for all of these tasks. I can take dictation for students that they can then write down. I help my students with their word choices and their sentence formation. One of our favorite activities is where we break down sentences. In this, we write a sentence where each word is a different color. Blue for nouns, green for verbs, and purple for adjectives.
Using an Apple Pencil so my students can write down these sentences in their own handwriting could help them see the sentences in a whole new light.
We would also like to use the pencil to underline our sight words as we read through passages on the iPad. We also can use the pencil to play games like spelling hang person and spelling horse. These games take a nonpreferred task of spelling and make it a joy to learn and teach. We can also use this pencil to help students complete mainstream schoolwork as well. Helping them review paragraphs they have written or worksheets they need to fill out. This way it will be helping them meet the needs of my students wherever they are from writing paragraphs to mainstream for mainstream teachers to learning sight words. We can also use this for helping with math as well. We can draw out and work out problems for our students so they can visually see what they are learning.
