A Pencil Box Of One's Own For 29 Gifted Bronx Second Graders

I am a 29 year old teacher of a class of 29 bright, curious, and amazing second-grade students. I work in an extremely impoverished area of the South Bronx. Although I am not from the area, I have grown very attached to the kids from the area, as well as to the community. This is my eighth year teaching at my school. It is extremely challenging but also incredibly rewarding. Nothing makes me happier than to see my kids learning and prospering. This year I was given the opportunity to teach a gifted class. My students are unbelievably intelligent, expressive, and inquisitive. They absorb all of the information that I teach them like little sponges! It's truly amazing. My wish is to give my kids everything that they need to grow and learn. I give them as much as I can with my own money, but that only goes so far. Some of my kids start off the school year with absolutely nothing. All I ask of their parents is to have them bring in a few folders and a sharpened pencil every day. I buy the rest of the materials that they need with my own money. I would love to be able to get my students something special that they can use every day and truly appreciate having. I know that a pencil box filled with supplies for each child would make my children ecstatic and more motivated to come to school and learn. I am requesting funding to purchase enough basic school supplies for 29 students -- pencils, crayons, scissors, rulers, glue sticks, erasers, and pencil boxes -- as well as a few other basic classroom items. My students, as well as myself, would be very grateful!
