This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

10th graders are wonderful: full of energy, curious, independent, and excited. They can be the fastest learners at our small school--even though they face very difficult odds.

Most of my 10th graders do not live with a parent--but instead live on their own, with family, or in group homes.

Their free time is precious because they are working, commuting to school, and just simply surviving. Our first book together needs to be awesome. It needs to be worth their time.

My Project

The Fault in Our Stars was a clear hit this school year. It was my most-lent library book and students would sneak time to read it--instead of sneaking time to use phones, chat, or do anything else teenagers love to do. This book stole the hearts of boys and girls and I knew immediately that all of my students should have a chance to read it. The good news is, once we have a class set, we can share it for years to come. Pretty cool, huh?

Imagine students who are rewarded for their hard work with "reading time" and a teacher who has to find extra books for voracious readers.

In our community, that is pretty uncommon. With your help, it is possible.
