Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in one of the largest school districts in the nation. My 7th grade English Language Arts students consist mainly of Latino students with rich Mexican roots. 90.4% of our students qualify for free or reduced meals at school. Gang activity and violence are common elements of my school's community.
After taking a survey of the books in my class library, I realized that I lack high interest and relevant books in which the main characters represent the boys in my classroom. My students showed a particular interest in Parrot in the Oven and students generated a wait list to read my one book in the class library. My students will greatly appreciate a class set of Parrot in the Oven to read and discuss with their classmates. This will eliminate the need for a wait list and ensure that all students benefit from reading books that appeal to their individual interests.
As a teacher with a diverse student population, I constantly seek books that positively represent the students I teach. A class set of Parrot in the Oven will benefit all my students as they realize during whole and small group readings and discussions that gangs, violence, sibling and parental conflicts and influences are universal themes that we all deal with.
As a donor, your help will ensure that my students realize that their past or present situations do not dictate their future. Please consider this proposal and help my students realize their strengths and become productive members of this society.
