My Project
My students are avid readers in school, and avid athletes at home. They often come to school after a weekend telling me about the competitions they traveled to, the wins and losses their team had, and what practices and games they have this week.
This project will merge my student's love of sports with a collection of high-quality and award-winning books that illustrate the connection between sports and math.
Students will understand how the athletics they pursue outside of school incorporate the math concepts they are learning in the classroom.
As students read these books, I will invite them to create "book talks" like they do in their Language Arts class, and share about these books at the start of our math class so that other students will be inspired to read them too!
Several books in this project have received The Mathical Book Prize from the Simons Laufer Mathematical Sciences Institute, in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. I am on a mission to bring high-quality books to my intermediate students, and, as their math teacher, I have selected these texts to help students build connections between the math concepts we learn in class and the world of sports that they enjoy.
My students will benefit from continuing to grow their love of reading with access to new award-winning books, while also learning how math is weaved throughout the fabric of their lives and the lives all those who play sports. Please help me to show my students the interconnectedness of math in their world as they dive into these books about their favorite games!
