My Students

My 9th grade students are creative, thoughtful, and empathetic. They love their families, and realize that by getting a solid education, they can also take care of them one day. When they come into my room and immediately look at the whiteboard to see what we're doing, or when they come in and ask about my day, there's a real sense that they value what I'm having them think about in class.

Like all of us, they just want a good story.

By the time students walk into my room, most of them have a hatred for the written word. And when you think about all the texts they were force fed throughout elementary and middle school, could you blame them? The texts that students have to read have barely changed since the time I graduated back in '04.

When I give them stories that are emotionally honest, insightful into the human condition, and just a little bit crazy or nasty, my students provide more insightful writing. They open up more with their thoughts. They make connections to their lives and to the world. Deep down, all students love to read.

My Project

Getting new novels into the class library will provide students with a plethora of stories to choose from. Every class period starts off with ten-to-twelve minutes of silent reading, and at the end of each quarter students have to do some sort of book review for the class. Reading has such a heavy emphasis that students throughout the year eventually get their hands on a book that they like.

These stories will enrich their minds and show them that a good book can be more captivating than a TV show or video game.
