A Non-Traditional Room for the Non-Traditional Students!

Help me give my students access to their entire room, which they can utilize on their level, where they are at, even when staff is having to deal with more challenging behaviors.

My Project

When I started teaching in my classroom in 2017, I was assigned 8 students with Autism and 2 paraprofessionals to help support these students. My students were all lower functioning and used an adaptive curriculum I was well versed in. We had students who had stimming issued and some occasional behavioral outbursts due to frustrations. We were easily able to manage the classroom with typical ABA strategies.

Today, the make-up of my classroom is very different!

It is still myself and 2 paraprofessionals; however, it is a mixture of students with Autism and students with such significant behaviors that they cannot make adequate progress in the general education setting. To complicate matters, the cognitive functioning of all my students are such that an adaptive curriculum is still needed. To further complicate classroom management, I am now at 10 students.

It is apparent that my class roster becomes made up of more non-traditional students every year and if I am going to continue to be an effective teacher, I need to meet them where they are at versus expect them to meet me where my current classroom set up is at. This means I need the communities help in changing my classroom from the traditional set-up of classroom desks and expectations to a classroom where students can make use of the entire classroom with a variety of alternative seating options and learning environments so that when one environment does not work in that moment, they have another alternative to be successful in.

My administration is on board with my vision and is supportive in the purchase of what is within the budget, the rest of my vision I bring to Donor's Choose. I greatly appreciate YOUR support!
