This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
This project is for students in a special integrated course with Journalism and US History. Our students will learn about how journalists in history have spoken out about issues in their community, such as the Muckrakers during the Progressive Era. They will become modern day muckrakers and will find issues that concern them in our own community to speak out on as their community service project!
Students will research issues they are concerned that are a part of the AP US History curriculum, such as individual liberties, civil rights, education, immigration and create a theatrical play to highlight those issues for a real audience.
The real audience members are members of the community in the city that we live in and will include community partners with our campus, local business leaders, etc. The play will be performed for our community at a local community theater, and not on our campus to ensure a wider community impact and outreach, and will be written by and performed by my students. This project will include costumes and materials such as canvas backdrops for them to paint scenes for the performance. Students will have an authentic voice and platform to choose which key issues they speak out about for this project and how they will engage the community. The purpose of this project is to engage our community in critical issues and decisions that have impacted American history and that will impact our future as Americans too!
