A New Way Of Witnessing Poetry

My students need 35 copies of the novel "Witness" by Karen Hesse.

This year, I want to teach poetry like I've never taught it before. I teach 8th grade language arts in a rural district, and many of my students live in poverty. In years passed, most of these farm kids have had a total aversion to poetry. I want that to change this year! I want them to see poetry in a different light, and your support is the spark I need to get this fire going.

Funding for classroom supplies is limited, and since I work in a high poverty district, most students cannot afford to purchase their own copy of a book.

I would like to purchase a class set of the novel, Witness, by Karen Hesse. This young adult novel is written in verse and is a great way to engage students in a study of poetry. Students are captivated by the story itself, and the format of the book allows them to consider poetic elements and devices.

Your support will allow my students to consider poetry in a new light, and it will also help develop a greater appreciation and deeper understanding for the many forms poetry can take. Instead of viewing poetry as lovey, dovey verse reserved for the inside of Valentine's Day cards, students will recognize that it can be used to powerfully communicate feelings, ideas, and stories regarding the human experience.
